Finding The Right Industry Is As Important As Finding The Right Stock
A big part of our success at EarningsBeats.com is finding the right industry groups to be in. It's not simply a case of picking stocks. If money is rotating out of a group, it will be much more difficult for an individual stock within that group to outperform the benchmark S&P 500. If you're not familiar with relative strength, let me show you what I'm referring to. Let's pull up a 3-month chart to view performance by industry within
a particular sector. Before I show you the 3-month performance of consumer staples industry groups, just be aware that the S&P 500 has gained 9.62% over this period for comparison purposes. Now let's view this summary of consumer staples for the same 3 months:
Consumer staples, as a sector, has not been very good, but check out the industry groups, especially the nondurable household products ($DJUSHN). The group has lost 9.34%, while the S&P 500 has gained 9.62%. Some might be interested in the group because perhaps it now presents better value. But our philosophy is to evaluate sectors and industry groups every quarter and only consider leading stocks from leading industry groups - with few
exceptions. We want to ride the momentum and invest in what Wall Street is bidding higher. We have no interest in trying to time the bottom in nondurable household products.
Happy trading!
