Whenever You're Unsure, Stick With Defense

When we see volatility like we're seeing now and like we've seen throughout 2022, it's usually best to trade fewer shares of aggressive stocks or simply trade defensive stocks. While many growth names have been trounced over the past 12-15 months, many defensive (or value) stocks have just kept running higher. One such stock is Church & Dwight (CHD), a nondurable household products company. Its 52-week high is 105.15 and yesterday CHD hit an intraday high of 104.44. What bear market? Check out this chart:

In the bottom panel, you can see that the $DJUSHN:$SPX ratio just hit a new 52-week high. This tells us that the DJUSHN is a leading industry group. If you look at the CHD:$DJUSHN ratio, you'll see that it's been rising since September 2021. CHD is a leading stock within the DJUSHN. This represents the type of trade that I would be interested in. I realize it's not a high-flying growth stock, but growth stocks are not high-flying right now. Trading those stocks on the long side will present more loss opportunities than profit opportunities. I'm expecting CHD to eventually break out of this bullish cup with handle pattern and it may coincide with CHD's quarterly earnings report on Thursday morning, before the opening bell.
